Wihlborgs signs agreement with Malmö University for 20,000 m²

Wihlborgs has signed a binding agreement with Malmö University for the construction and letting of the new Amphitrite building at Universitetsholmen, which will have teaching facilities, offices, the Faculty of Odontology and student unions. The building is scheduled for completion at the end of 2027 and will be a key feature of the development of the university’s urban campus as well as the historic waterfront location.

Amphitrite is centrally adjacent to the Niagara university building and the harbour basin, and will comprise just over 20,000 square metres across eight floors. The ground floor will house a reception, service centre, study spaces, a café and a large auditorium while the other floors will be home to learning environments, workplaces, student unions and university dental care.

The architects who won the parallel assignment for the building with the winning concept of “Magasin för kunskap” (“Storehouse of Knowledge”) are C.F. Møller Architects and Förstberg Ling together with the urban planning firm Softer. The concept will preserve parts of the existing warehouse and highlight aspects of the area’s dock and industrial past. One example of reuse in the project is that the bricks from the current building will be used for the new facade. The new building’s welcoming entrances, vibrant interiors, a visual nod to history and proximity to water will provide attractive living environments for students as well as Malmö locals.

The basic rent for the lease is approximately SEK 69 million per year.

“We are pleased to have progressed this far in the process and eagerly anticipate following the construction and development of our sustainable and creative campus. Amphitrite will be a focal point for students, staff and dental students,” says Mia Rönnmar, Vice-Chancellor of Malmö University.

“Malmö University is a key catalyst for Malmö and the Öresund region’s development and competitiveness, and we are thrilled to have been entrusted with developing more new environments that promote this. The combination of stability, provided through connecting with the location’s history, and flexibility, imparted by the opportunity of adapting to meet new requirements, is in true Malmö spirit. Considerable thought and soul have been invested in this building, and I hope this will be appreciated by students, employees and residents of Malmö,” says Ulrika Hallengren, CEO of Wihlborgs.

Background

Following a public procurement, Wihlborgs won the assignment to, in consultation with Malmö University and the City of Malmö, design and plan construction of the building, which will be leased by the university in the future. The parallel assignment was conducted in spring 2024, with refinements as an additional task in June for two of the pre-qualified teams. Thereafter, the winning idea has been developed further by C.F. Møller Architects/Förstberg Ling/Softer.

An agreement has now been signed for the construction and letting, which is also a prerequisite for the acquisition of the land. Wihlborgs will acquire the land from the City of Malmö in spring 2025 for a development rights value of SEK 179 million.
